Going Back Home is not Always Easy

I have been back at Open Bible Baptist Church for a little over two years. It was a very hard decision to move back to the place that I grew up and to become the pastor after my father had been the pastor for 43 years.

One of the reasons that it was hard to move back is because of a good majority of the people in the church, watched me grow up in that church. They knew all of my warts and I also knew a good deal of theirs.

I think it is easier sometimes not know the people and for the people not to know you. The reason I say that is because everyone has a fresh start. Yes, I know that people change and that they grow, but I also know people have long memories.

Another reason that it has not been easy to go back home is because of what I mentioned in my opening remarks. Some may say well you are following your father it should not be as hard, I would say that it is probably harder, because of that same fact. Though I do understand that the pastor who follows a long time pastor will always be compared to the previous pastor, they are not blood. That can make things a bit more difficult when people at times expect you to be like your father because of being his son.

God has taught me a great deal over these two years, I have learned that though it might not be easy to go back, it is always best to follow God’s will for your life.

Easy is not the goal, the goal is to glorify God with your life, no matter if it easy or if there is great difficulty along the way.

So no matter where you find yourself in ministry as a ‘vocational’ Christian or as a ‘volunteer’ Christian, remember that just because it is hard sometimes does not mean that you are not in the place God wants you.
