3 Reasons to Stretch Yourself

Philippians 3.14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

The beginning of the new year comes with a great deal of promise and opportunity. It is a time where many people join a gym to get healthy, loose weight, and get fit. It is a time where there are many thoughts of recreation, becoming a new you  and getting rid of some of the old habits that held you back in the previous year.

When it comes to breaking those bad habits or changing direction, the only way that can be done is to stretch yourself. What I mean is to get out of your comfort zone. When you get comfortable is when you start to get lazy, and complacent.

This is also true when it comes to your spiritual life, when you get comfortable in your spiritual life, you get lazy spiritually. One of the best ways to get out of a rut physically is to stretch yourself and that is also true spiritually.

Here are three reasons to stretch yourself spiritually.

1. It will keep you from getting lazy spiritually. This is what I call the drift. When you get lazy spiritually you just drift, you just go through the motions in your daily devotions, or you are not consistent daily in reading the word and prayer. Your relationship with God is a routine. There is little to or no experiencing of God on a daily basis.

2. It will help you to go deeper in your relationship with the Lord. Like anything else in life, when you go further than you have in the past you will experience things that you never have before. Your faith will be deepened in God, your love for God will grow and your trust in God will increase.

3. It will help you experience areas where you need to grow. When you press, stretch yourself, you will find areas where you need to grow. You will feel the soreness in the ‘spiritual muscles’ that need to develop and be strengthened.

This year determine that you will stretch yourself spiritually and I can guarantee that if you do you will not get lazy spiritually,  you will experience a deeper relationship with God and you will also find areas in your life where you need to grow.
