The Christian Escape Artist

Many of you may have heard the name Harry Houdini, he was a magician but he was more than just a card wheeling magician. Houdini is known as one of the greatest escape artists of all time. He was most famous for his ability to escape from what seemed like anything and everything, including ropes, handcuffs, straitjackets, jail cells, water-filled milk cans, and even nailed-shut boxes that had been thrown into a river. He was very good at getting out of very difficult situations.

Houdini is not unlike most Christians, we all tend to be an escape artist to one degree or another.

What we try to do is spend much of our time escaping our weakness. When we really should be focusing on, that the God of the universe is present with us. We desperately try to get out of where are because it is uncomfortable or feels bad. Instead, we need to be aware that God is present in our broken places.

The Bible says:

2Corinthians 12.9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

If you remember with me Paul wanted out of his weakness, he had prayed 3 times that God would remove his infirmity of the flesh. Instead of God removing the weakness, He gave Paul grace to endure the weakness.

Look at what Paul says about Christ and how through weakness He was crucified, but Christ now lives by the power of God.

2Corinthians 13.4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.

We are weak also but we are to live by the power of God in our lives. That is the normal Christian life.

The reason that we do not see more of the power of God at work in our lives is because we are fighting to escape what God has ordained to reveal His power to us. – Pastor

We need to remember that all of us are completely weak and we are all very broken. But God will use that weakness in our lives if we just allow Him.

So let me challenge you to give up your side job of being a Christian escape artist and yield to the power of God in your life. He will give you the grace to get through.
